History of the Firm

For more than 50 years, BMA has built a better Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Originally established as Brown Engineers by Mr. Joseph L. Brown, Jr., the firm has earned the reputation as one of the strongest firms on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and a valued place to work by its employees.

The firm was originally established in 1967 by Joseph L. Brown, Jr. as Brown Engineers. In April 1987, Bill Mitchell joined the firm and became owner of Brown & Mitchell, Inc. Under Bill Mitchell’s leadership, the firm grew substantially, expanding staff and services. Surveying capabilities were added in 1991, and in 1992, an environmental specialist joined the team to help address emerging environmental issues.

As an added benefit, two BMA employees became certified in the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Program administered by the United States Green Building Council. In addition, Mr. Mitchell is a Certified Construction Manager which allows the firm to provide Construction/Project Management services. BMA is a community supporter and strives to enhance our community by joining organizations that promote a safe and healthy environment such as being a Bronze Member of the National Complete Streets Program and being involved in Gulf Coast Business Council and the Coast Chamber.

In 2008, Bill Mitchell began turning over leadership of the firm to Dax Alexander. Having over 20 years with the firm, Dax Alexander is very familiar with every aspect of the firm’s procedures. As owner and president, Mr. Alexander changed the name of the firm to Brown, Mitchell & Alexander, Inc.

Over the years, leadership of the firm has changed, staff and state-of-the-art technology have been added, and the scope of services has broadened, but one thing remains the same: we remain dedicated to our mission to provide quality engineering services while building a better Mississippi Gulf Coast.
