HARRISON COUNTY PEDESTRIAN PATHWAY

Harrison County Pedestrian Pathway— PH I & II

Brown, Mitchell & Alexander, Inc. (BMA), was selected by the Harrison County Board of Supervisors to provide professional engineering and design services for the construction of approximately 8 miles of pedestrian pathway south of U.S. Highway 90 between Henderson Point (Pass Christian) and Point Cadet (Biloxi) in Harrison County, Mississippi.

Phases I & II consisted of both boardwalk and concrete sidewalk, providing aesthetically pleasing walking access to the Harrison County Beaches. Extensive coordination with state and federal agencies for construction of this project was also required. Construction for both phases totaled approximately $4 million and 80% of the money was provided by Transportation enhancement funds administered by the Mississippi Department of Transportation. BMA is very familiar with the procedures for preparing application, construction oversight and close-out documents required for projects utilizing these funds.

In 2005, this project was severely damaged as a result of extensive wave action caused by Hurricane Katrina. BMA assisted the Board of Supervisors with design for the replacement of this project which included demolition of the remaining timber boardwalk and installation of approximately 8 miles of concrete pedestrian pathway. Design also included a connected support wall which was constructed from the concrete walkway slab to the existing seawall. The ends of the support wall are capped with solid concrete. This support wall was designed to prevent water from getting underneath the concrete walkway and potentially creating an uplifting effect. Estimated cost for repairs to the pedestrian pathway totaled $10 million and funds for these repairs were provided by FEMA. BMA is very familiar with the procedures for preparing application, construction oversight and close-out documents required for projects utilizing these funds.
