Chemours (DuPont) Ilmenite Ore Handling Facility

Misssissippi State Port Authority - Gulfport, MS
In 2013, Brown, Mitchell & Alexander, Inc. (BMA) in association with Simpkins & Costelli, Inc., Gottlieb, Barnett & Bridges, Inc., Shaw Design Group, P.A., and Canon Engineering, LLC was tasked by the Mississippi State Port Authority to provide professional engineering services related to and required for the design and construction of a new ilmenite ore handling and storage facility on the immediate south end of the west pier at the Port of Gulfport. Construction of this new facility relocates the existing facility to a more suitable location for accessibility and increased storage capacity, provides a more efficient handling of material and supports more production at the Chemours Delisle Facility.
The project consists of 15 silos (45’ to 65’ diameter; 152’ height) with a total capacity of 200,000 tons which will double the existing storage capacity. This project will also streamline the ore handling and conveyance process and provide concrete silos for an extended life of the facility.  The silos were built using a continuous pour technique that utilized five hundred (500) construction workers , working around the clock; each team of 250, alternating 12 hour shifts. They poured 12,000 cubic yards of concrete, and placed two (2) million pounds of rebar over a seven day period.
The Project budget was approximately $86 Million, and was completed in Fall 2016.
