Downtown Streetscape Improvments

about this project

Brown, Mitchell & Alexander, Inc. (BMA) was selected by the City of Gulfport to provide professional engineering services for streetscape improvements to the City’s downtown area. This project was funded through the Community Grant Block Development (CDBG) program.

The Downtown Streetscape Improvements project included replacement and widening of sidewalks, asphalt milling and overlay, striping, replacement of traffic signals, new street lighting, landscaping, irrigation and renovation of the World War II Memorial. The project involves three phases totaling approximately $7 Million utilizing CDBG funds.

The most recent phase completed was “Fishbone Alley” in September 2016, which will help Gulfport’s downtown businesses and restaurants as a destination. "Fishbone Alley" has since been mentioned in Southern Living and the "Urban Livingroom Project" element was a winner of the  2017 "Innovation on Main Street" award. This award is given by Main Street America for successful, sustainable initiatives that represent new approaches to downtown revitalization challenges or opportunities. Fishbone Alley also made the New York Post list of "8 Most Amazing American Streets..." published in April 2017, which lists their pick of America's greatest urban thoroughfares.
