The Small Craft Harbor to Oak St. pedestrian walkway project has two primary goals:
In 2018 representatives of the City of Biloxi and Brown, Mitchell & Alexander, Inc. (BMA) conceived an idea for a concrete pathway structure with a cantilever that would aid in reducing bind-blown sand from Hwy. 90. In 2020, BMA was selected to providing engineering services for the project. Once completed, the project will consist of a
12-foot-wide structure that will allow pedestrians and bicyclists to travel along the beach with views of the Mississippi Sound and nearby Deer Island. The structure will help to promote a healthy lifestyle, allow opportunities to experience Coastal Mississippi’s scenic beauty and it will help to reduce wind erosion of the Sand Beach. The reduction of wind erosion of the beach will have a few positive results being the direct reduction in challenges to motorists that sand on Highway 90 provides; a reduction in the cost of sand removal and the reduced need to replace sand that has eroded.
Dax Alexander, Project Manager, was quoted as saying “I’m so thankful to be a part of a project that has some many positive outcomes for our community. It is not often that you get to work on a project that promotes the Coast’s Scenic Beauty, a Healthy Lifestyle, and will help to preserve our beach”.
